On the path to becoming a sought-after home builder for people with access to the inside story, we learned a few things about Roswell. What we heard does a lot to explain what makes the Roswell homes for sale such a good idea. It boils down to this. Roswell has proven to be a resource that supports the value of all Atlanta homes for sale, and in the process, it claims a few advantages that are all its own.
Perched as it is between Atlanta and Alpharetta, barely a half-hour from Midtown – or Buckhead, take your pick – Roswell is considered by some to be just one of Atlanta’s high cheekbones. Yet with a history, heritage, and character all its own, Roswell is even more than that.
Tell You a Little Story
When the world came to Atlanta’s doorstep for the 1996 Summer Olympics, the local movers and shakers who made up ACOG – the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games – learned from the International Olympic Committee’s earliest visits that many of our visitors from abroad were going to want to visit Tara, and many thousands more were at least going to ask where Tara is. Because Tara is fictional, the home of Scarlett O’Hara in a novel that was once the second best-selling book in the world, ACOG needed a resourceful answer for the world’s curiosity. Roswell to the rescue.
The Olympic Committee found that directing visitors to Roswell was an exceedingly satisfying answer. Just the atmosphere and pace of the town itself left little doubt that the literary pilgrims had found their way. For most, “Roswell” was answer enough.
A Life and an Inspiration
For visitors who wanted a more specific answer about Tara, Bulloch Hall became the best place to point out. While there are several significant ante bellum homes still standing in Roswell, Bulloch Hall had this further claim to authenticity. It was here that a legendary young lady named Martha Bulloch, known as Mittie, was reared by a prominent planter family. Renowned for her beauty and independent spirit, Mittie met a visiting gentleman from New York, Theodore Roosevelt, Sr. They were married in front of the pocket doors in the formal parlor at Bulloch Hall. Their second child, Theodore, became President of the United States.
It was believed by contemporaries of author Margaret Mitchell that she based the character Scarlett O’Hara in part on Mittie Bulloch. Mittie’s elder daughter, Bamie, who assumed precocious responsibility when her father was away in Washington, is said to be a further inspiration for the character that so many visitors wanted to trace.
A Ground for Value
The here-and-now significance of Roswell’s resourceful story is that towns such as this – in the orbit of a world-class city and in easy reach of its economic, artistic, and social advantages, and yet rich with its own character, atmosphere, and livability – make the whole metropolitan area more viable, more valuable, because of the options they offer. Thanks to towns such as Roswell – and Alpharetta and Decatur, among others – Atlanta has more to offer to people of every interest and inclination.
As a result, people have far more to choose than just city or suburb. We’ll be glad to talk with you about Atlanta’s remarkable ability to take part in the emerging future of cities, and the opportunities this may represent for living and investment.
